888,246 Poppies

Today marks the centenary of England’s entry into The Great War, now known as World War One. To commemorate this moment in history, the Tower of London commissioned an art installation of 888,246 ceramic poppies. Titled “Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red,” each poppy represents one for every man lost.

At this point only about 140,000 of the poppies have been planted. The installation work with continue through Armistice Day, when it is scheduled to be complete. Already the imagery is striking.
