David Byrne is on to his next venture: Color guard. Yes, that color guard.
After finishing his dabble in disco musicals with Fatboy Slim in Here Lies Love last month, Byrne’s decided to give his full attention to “the sport of the arts” with a live soundtrack.
ContemporaryColor, co-comissioned by Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) and Toronto’s Luminato Festival,will bring together 10 color guard teams from the US and Canada and musicians like Nelly Furtado, Kelis, and St. Vincent in what it promises to be “the biggest glitter cannon show of your life.”
Byrne first got the idea for Contemporary Color in 2008, when he was asked to lend composition to a high school team’s performance.
“Being a musician I naturally wondered to myself: What if these performances had really great live music? Wouldn’t that lift it to another level?” Byrne said.
